This project initially includes a subset of 120,000 keywords and phrases (most of them taken from the Collins-Reverso English Dictionary). The dictionaries for French, Spanish, and Portuguese are granted to MIT from the Spanish-American Library and the Biblioteca Virtual de Andalucia. The dictionaries are also language-specific subsets of Collins English Dictionary. The project's goals are as follows: The primary purpose of the project is to have a compact, relatively complete dictionary of English equivalent terms for all Web-related resources. This dictionary will be updated continuously and will be significantly smaller and faster than most existing dictionaries. It will be easier to keep it up-to-date because it will be based on the single most comprehensive dictionary of English (Collins). The secondary purpose of the project is to provide a reference and data base for online English dictionaries, such as Wikipedia, etcetera. This means that users will always find what they are looking for: the English equivalent of the term or the text they are reading in the other language. Finally, a query to the database will produce a link to the equivalent external resource.
These services will be implemented as a Web-based application for the MIT World Wide Web server and will be provided by the MIT online infoseek-like service, ATSF. The project will leverage the benefits of a distributed computing environment, including multicore, shared disk, Pentium 4, as well as the current Internet. Knowledge extracted from the Web will be integrated into the dictionary and will be dynamically updated.
A separate dictionary database, based on DictionaryLive, will be created for the project. This dictionary will be searched automatically for related terms when the user enters a (multi-word or compound) search term. This database is intended for use in any type of application that will need a word-based dictionary. The dictionary will provide the reference database for open-access online dictionaries such as Wikipedia. The word database will be updated, as necessary, based on the most recent versions from the web dictionaries. 7211a4ac4a
